Are you worried that you will set off alarms in airport security? Teens and braces – the hip new thing! Featured by Brigham Orthodontics in Scottsdale and Cave Creek, AZ. Call 480-767-8810.

Teens and braces – a great combination that is improving kids confidence and their social interaction in many ways.

Braces? Many teens dread teen braces, but they end up getting them anyway. While most kids are excited about getting them, a good number doesn’t want braces mostly because they feel as if it will ruin their social life if they do. In reality, just the opposite is true. The teen’s new life-long smile with straight teeth is enjoyed by them for the rest of their lives. But what are braces all about and why do many kids and teenagers need them?

Many teens don’t have the perfect set of teeth they and their parents want them to have. To find out why people need braces, it may be a good idea to talk about how your teeth are growing. After your baby teeth fell out in childhood, they were replaced by permanent adult teeth. All teeth have more or less the same basic makeup. Although for some teens and adults the teeth grow at the correct position, many people are not as fortunate.

View article “Why you or your child might consider orthodontic treatment”, click here >> http://goo.gl/cD1Lt .

Some teeth overlap or grow crooked. In some cases teeth may twist or rotate. Also, some teens just have mouths that are too small, which tends to crowd the teeth and make it difficult to shift positions. At this point, you may think that the only reason to go for braces is because you have crooked teeth and therefore a crooked smile. This however is not always true. There are many teens and adults who need braces for other reasons.

Some people, both teens and adults alike, were born with unequal jaw size. This leads to a condition called “bad bite” or malocclusion. If your upper jaw is bigger than your lower jaw, you will most likely have an overbite. If your lower jaw is bigger, then you will most likely have under bite. Thus, even if you have straight, beautiful teeth but have bad bite, you may need to have braces.

Crooked teeth and malocclusion should be treated with teen braces. These bad bites can interfere with proper chewing and teeth that are not optimal condition simply do not work as well as those straight ones. Chewing is the first part of eating and digestion so it is important that your teeth can properly do its job. Misaligned teeth are harder to keep clean and brush thoroughly. Chances are you will have lots of spots which are harder to reach, causing unwanted cavities and tooth decay.

Needless to say, most teenagers face is at a point in their lives when they feel self-conscious about their general appearance. A set of crooked teeth doesn’t help anyone feel confident about their smile and their looks. The improved aesthetics provided by teen braces are just as important to note as its health and hygiene aspect. Teen braces will provide not only straight teeth and a beautiful smile, but they can give teens the confidence to do their best in all their activities.

And good news, today there are several teeth straightening options, not just the conventional metal braces. There are clear braces and clear teeth aligners that are now very popular with teens. Brigham Orthodontics provides a free consultation to empower you and your parents (and teen) about all the new options that make having straight teeth a lot more fun!

Everything you need to know about Oral Habit Therapy (thumb-sucking). Featured by Brigham Orthodontics in Cave Creek and Scottsdale, AZ. Call 480-767-8810.

Oral Habit Therapy (thumb-sucking).

Previously posted on SteadyHealth.com.

It is well-known that many infants and young children calm themselves by sucking their thumbs. While most children will stop on their own, some children continue with thumb-sucking past the age of 4 or 5.

The problem is that prolonged thumb-sucking can lead to serious dental and speech problems. That is why many parents are worried about this habit disorder. However, you must know that by using lots of love and encouragement, you can help your child succeed in breaking the thumb-sucking habit.

Is thumb-sucking normal?

Thumb sucking is normal in babies and young children and very common as well. A natural sucking instinct leads some babies to suck their thumbs during their first few months of life. Some doctors claim babies suck their thumbs even before birth. Babies may also suck on their fingers, hands, or items such as pacifiers or anything similar.

Why do babies suck their thumbs?

Babies have a natural urge to suck that usually decreases after the age of 6 months. However, many babies continue to suck their thumbs to soothe themselves much longer. Eventually, thumb-sucking can become a habit in babies and young children who use it to comfort themselves. Most common, they are sucking thumb when they feel hungry, afraid, restless, quiet, sleepy, or bored. The fact is that about 70% to 90% of infants suck their thumbs. Most of these children gradually stop on their own between ages three and six, but if that does not happen, it became habit disorder.

Does thumb-sucking cause any problems?

It is true that prolonged thumb-sucking may cause a child to develop dental problems. Thumb sucking can cause a child’s teeth to become improperly align or push the teeth outward, sometimes malforming the roof of the mouth. Malocclusion usually corrects itself when the child stops with this habit. However, the longer thumb-sucking continues, the more likely it is that orthodontic treatment will need correction. A child may also develop speech problems, including mispronouncing Ts and Ds, lisping, and thrusting out the tongue.

At what point does thumb-sucking become a problem?

Thumb sucking in children younger than four years old is usually not a problem. Children who suck their thumbs frequently or with great intensity after the age of four or five, or those who continue to suck their thumbs after age five are at risk for dental or speech problems. In rare cases, thumb-sucking after age 5 is in response to an emotional problem or other disorder. Commonly, it could be a problem with anxiety. A child with this type of problem needs to evaluation by a health professional. Most other children stop sucking their thumbs after introducing simple treatment measures.

How is problem thumb-sucking treated?

Many experts recommend ignoring thumb-sucking in a child who is preschool age or younger. Most young children stop sucking their thumbs on their own, although some children who suck their thumbs may need some treatment. You should especially consider treatment if your child is pulling the hair, especially when they are between 12 and 24 months of age. It is also concern when they continue to suck a thumb often or with great intensity after the age of four or five. If you notice any of this, you should ask help to stop the behavior. It is common for child to develop dental or speech problems because of the behavior. You should also seek for help if your child feels embarrassed, or are teased or shamed by other people because of the behavior. Usually, you could treat your child at home and treatment includes parents setting rules and providing distractions. It may be helpful to limit the times and places that your child may suck his or her thumb. It could also help to put away blankets or other items your child associates with thumb-sucking. Offering praise and rewards for not thumb-sucking might also help your child break the habit of thumb-sucking. As your child matures, usually around age 5, he or she may be able to take a more active role in treatment of stopping this habit disorder. It would be helpful that you talk to your child openly about the effects of thumb-sucking. Put gloves on your child’s hands or wrap the thumb with an adhesive bandage or a cloth that might help as well. Explain that the glove, bandage, or cloth is not a punishment but is only there to remind him or her not to suck the thumb. Try to develop a reward system, such as putting stickers on a calendar or otherwise recording each day that your child does not suck thumb. After an agreed-upon number of days, have a celebration for your child as successful therapy. You could also use a special nontoxic, bitter-tasting nail coating, such as Thum.

  • Apply it like fingernail polish to the thumbnail each morning, before bed, and whenever you see that your child wish to thumb suck. This treatment is most successful when it you combine it with a reward system. If these treatments do not appear to be successful, you could use other methods including behavioral therapy, thumb devices, or oral devices.
  • Behavioral therapy helps a child avoid thumb-sucking through various techniques. There could help substituting tapping      fingers together quietly. Behavioral therapy works best if all people involved in their child’s care follow the treatment plan.
  • Thumb devices, such as a thumb post, are common for children who suffer of severe thumb-sucking problems. A thumb      device is usually made of nontoxic plastic and child wear it over thumb. It is in place with straps that go around the wrist. A thumb device prevents a child from being able to suck his or her thumb. Child should wear this thumb device during all day. You could remove it only after the child has gone 24 hours without trying to suck a thumb. If the child starts to suck his or her thumb again, you should put this device again until your child completely get rid of this habit of thumb-sucking. It is important to know that you should fit this thumb device with a health professional.
  • Oral devices, such as a palatal arch or crib that fits into the roof of the mouth, interfere with the pleasure a child gets from thumb-sucking. It may take several months for the child to stop sucking the thumb when these devices are used. Once the child stops sucking, parents may choose to continue using the device for several months after this, to achieve permanent results. This may prevent common problem when child from starts the habit again. It is also important to know that you should fit oral devices by your child’s orthodontist.

Brigham Orthodontics provides a complete Oral Habit Therapy (thumb-sucking) program for your child, contact us now, click here >> http://goo.gl/qEmWe.

What to do with thumb-sucking habits?

The survival of a newborn baby depends on instinctive nutritive sucking, which allows for essential nourishment, because infants also engage in non-nutritive sucking of their fingers and thumbs. This provides them with a sense of well-being, comfort, and security. Thumb sucking however, can also have negative influences on both dental development and speech that you will be able to notice later in your child’s life. After the age of four, correction of a thumb habit may involve using psychological or physical preventive measures. The ultimate goal, however, should be to correct the cause of the habit, rather than the habit itself as some people might think. It is important that you understand the mouth provides a baby’s first contact with the external world. In addition, sucking is an infant’s first coordinated muscular activity. Babies even suck their thumb before they are born, which could prove this opinion. Since prolonged thumb-sucking, can deform a child’s upper dental arch, provoke crossbite, protrude teeth, and create an open bite, your child should definitely receive treatment if there is present prolonged thumb-sucking. The extent of these negative consequences depends by the duration of the habit. It is also depending from the daily frequency of the habit, and the manner in which the thumb places into the mouth. Children tend to suck their thumb when they are tired, bored, under stress, or in need of comfort, so you should understand why your child sucking the thumb at first. Taking away the soothing effects of a thumb habit may result in poor conduct by the child, and preventing a thumb habit, against the wishes of a child, may result in learning problems, bed wetting, sleep disorders, initiation of a new habit, or persistence of the old habit. Evaluation by a local experienced orthodontist may be necessary for the eventual resolution of the problem in many cases.

The importance of hygiene during orthodontic treatment. Featured by Brigham Orthodontics in Scottsdale and Cave Creek, Arizona. Call 480-767-8810.

The importance of hygiene during orthodontic treatment.

As you eat, your teeth, brackets and wires collect food. If food is left on teeth overnight, thick plaque (bacterial colonies) forms on the teeth and the space between the teeth and the gums. Plaque causes bad breath, tooth decay and swollen gums (gingivitis).

Bleeding and swollen gums are a sure sign that plaque is not being properly removed. If your gums are swollen and inflamed, your teeth will not move as easily, you will experience more discomfort during your treatment, and white spots or decay will form on the teeth under and around the brackets.

It is discouraging to work hard to straighten teeth, only to finish and find decay or white spots on the teeth. Don’t let it happen to you.

The following is essential for the proper care of your teeth and gums:

Soft Bristled Toothbrush – Use your toothbrush after each meal and before bedtime. A travel brush carried in a purse or placed ina locker is great for brushing after lunch. Examine your teeth for food and plaque and thoroughly clean all surfaces of the gums and brackets. Re-examine your teeth to make sure all visible food and plaque have been removed. Repeat this step as often as needed to ensure that no visible plaque or food remains. Extra care must be taken in the area between your gums and the braces. Concentrate on brushing your gums and the space between your gums and your teeth.

Waterpik– Along with brushing, use a Waterpik to loosen food and plaque before flossing and brushing. The Waterpik should be used on the lower water pressure settings so the gum tissue is not excessively irritated.

Recommendations for Brushing with Braces

  • Use a orthodontic toothbrush or an electric with an orthodontic head that can prevent breakage of orthodontic appliances and is designed to fight tooth decay.
  • Force the bristles of a toothbrush at a 45 degree angle to go into the spaces between the teeth and gum.

Flossing
People think flossing is not as important as brushing, but it is just as important as these areas are 35% of your teeth’s surface. Flossing removes plaque and food particles from between teeth and in the spaces between the teeth and gums – cavity-prone areas your brush can’t reach. If plaques (bacterial colonies) are not disorganized daily by the brush and floss, your gums will become inflamed and bleed (gingivitis).

Recommendations for Flossing with Braces
The most important time to brush is just before going to bed. Take your time and do it right.

  • Even though it is more difficult that without braces, it’s important to floss daily.
  • Use a floss threader to help guide floss between braces or under the archwire as shown in the video below.
  • Rinse your teeth to wash away food or other particles that you have removed.

Regular Dental Checkups – Although you are having your braces checked regularly, it is very important to continue to see your family dentist at least every six months for a thorough examination and cleaning of your teeth. If you experience difficulty with good oral hygiene, you might need to see your dentist more frequently.

Tips to avoid dental emergencies. Featured by Brigham Orthodontics with offices in Scottsdale and Cave Creek, Arizona. Call 480-767-8810.

Awesome tips to avoid dental emergencies.

Previously posted at PRWEB, source CDA.

For future reference be sure and share this article with family and friends.

Dental accidents include teeth that have been knocked out (avulsed), broken (fractured), or forced out of position (extruded or luxated).

If a dental emergency does occur, CDA recommends keeping the following tips in mind:

If a tooth is knocked out, attempt to find the tooth and immediately call your dentist for an emergency appointment. If found, carefully pick up the tooth by its crown and immerse in milk or a special media called Hank’s Balanced Salt Solution. Do not attempt to replace the tooth into the socket — this could cause further damage. If milk or solution is not available, wrap the tooth in a clean cloth or gauze and place in saliva.

Getting to the dentist as soon as possible is key to saving a knocked out tooth. Often if it’s within half an hour of the injury, it may be possible to re-implant the tooth.

If a tooth is broken, treatment will depend on the severity of the fracture but the mouth should be rinsed with warm water to clean the area and a cold compress applied to reduce any swelling.

View the FREE video, “What to do in the case of dental emergency”, click here >> http://goo.gl/Zmlwn .

Minor fractures can be smoothed by your dentist, restored with a composite restoration, or simply left alone. Regardless, a fractured tooth should be treated with care for several days. Moderate and severe fractures include damage to the enamel, dentin and/or pulp and should be seen by a dentist as soon as possible to determine proper treatment.

For injuries to the soft tissues of the mouth, like tears, puncture wounds and lacerations to the cheek, lips or tongue, clean the wound right away and visit an emergency room for necessary suturing or repair. Reduce bleeding from a tongue laceration by pulling the tongue forward and using gauze to place pressure on the wounded area.

Pet Tooth Care

You may not know this, but cats and dogs need to take care of their teeth too. But they can’t do it on their own, so they need your help. Without proper dental care, over 70% of dogs and cats show signs of oral disease by the age of 3. These oral problems go way beyond bad breath and can lead to more serious problems with their hearts, livers and kidneys. Here are some ways you can make sure your pet’s teeth stay healthy.

Practice regular dental care at home with your pets. Brush your puppy or kitten’s teeth with special pet toothpaste, starting when they are young. This way, your pets will get used to brushing at an early age. But don’t use your human toothpaste, as it may upset your pet’s tummy! If your pet doesn’t seem to like any of the toothpaste flavors, try adding a bit of garlic powder to lukewarm water and use that to moisten the brush – they love garlic.

If you are going to give you pet a treat – we recommend a biscuit. The abrasive action in chewing the biscuit will help keep their teeth well-scrubbed and clean!

How to prepare on the day you get braces. Featured by Brigham Orthodontics in Scottsdale and Cave Creek, AZ. Call 480-767-8810.

How to prepare on the day you get braces.

Braces can be painful and uncomfortable the first few days or even up to a week once you get them on. You’re going to want to make this procedure comfortable and prepare for your new smile. This article will give you some steps and tips on how to make that happen.

1-      Eat. Eat some hard foods or anything that you have to chew before you get your braces on. For a few days you’ll have an opportunity for some good mashed potatoes and ice-cream. (Take advantage of this as long as you can! LOL)

2-      Think positive. Don’t think of every day as another day with braces. Think of it as another day closer to getting them off and having beautiful straight teeth, an incredible smile and new-found confidence. Imagine how happy you will be with your straight teeth every day. Having a positive attitude will make life with braces, or anything, a lot easier.

3-      Remember patience. Always remember to be patient. It will take awhile to get the braces on. Bring music, a book, a small tablet computer or a distraction of sorts to keep yourself occupied and to help pass the time.

4-      Brush your teeth. It will make yours and your orthodontist’s experience a lot better if there isn’t gunk in between your teeth. It takes more time if your orthodontist has to clean your teeth. (That’s a dentist’s job.) Also don’t forget to brush that white film off of your tongue too.

5-      Make a plan. Take some rest time after your braces are on and you get home. Don’t go back to work or school after you leave the orthodontist office, take the day and let your mouth relax for a bit. Eat some ‘soft’ foods and read a book or watch a movie.

TIPS:

  • After you get your braces, repeat Step 1 and eat some food that you won’t be able to eat later on. Your teeth won’t hurt until a few hours after having your braces put on. Try not to eat anything with bread – it will get stuck in your braces.
  • Follow your guidelines given to you by your orthodontist. Only eat what they say you can and wear rubber bands as needed.
  • Afterwards, try to sleep a lot. You can’t feel the healing process when sleeping, usually.
  • Remember, it’s not that bad having braces. Your teeth will be sensitive for a few days, but after that, they will only be a bit uncomfortable after you get them adjusted.
  • Stick to your orthodontists plan! Having braces will pass a lot quicker if you are careful not to pop brackets or lose bands.
  • Your orthodontist will give you wax for your teeth. Be sure to use it if your braces are uncomfortable.

When do you need orthodontic correction?

Dental abnormalities affecting the position or alignment of the teeth can dramatically affect the esthetics and functionality of your smile. Orthodontic treatment — with braces, retainers or clear aligners — corrects conditions such as crowded or crooked teeth, overbite (when top teeth extend beyond bottom teeth), underbite (when bottom teeth are too far forward or upper teeth are too far back), incorrect jaw position and jaw-joint disorders.

Orthodontic correction also may be necessary when the upper and lower jaws do not meet properly, resulting in an uneven bite. If not properly managed, an uneven bite could lead to the development of temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ). Protruding, crowded or irregularly spaced teeth and jaw problems may be genetic. Certain situations and habits, such as accidents, not wearing protective devices like mouth guards during athletic activity, and premature tooth loss, thumb sucking and tongue thrusting also may contribute to conditions requiring orthodontic correction.

The benefits of orthodontic correction.

Straight teeth look great and help you smile with confidence, thus improving self-esteem.

Orthodontics also improves function and make cleaning your teeth easier – ensuring healthy teeth and gums forever and avoiding dental health problems later in life. A poor bite puts undue stress on chewing muscles and can cause pain or jaw problems.

Your regular dentist can usually do better restorations if the teeth are aligned properly by an orthodontist. The risk of damage to protruding teeth is reduced after they have been corrected by an orthodontist.

Orthodontic treatment can be carried out in conjunction with other dental specialties such as helping buried teeth erupt and preparing teeth for a bridge or implants.

October is National Orthodontic Health Month! Featured by Brigham Orthodontics in Scottsdale and Cave Creek, Arizona. Call 480-767-8810.

October is National Orthodontic Health Month, celebrated by  Dr. Gary Brigham and the entire staff at Brigham Orthodontics in Scottsdale and Cave Creek, Arizona.

At Brigham Orthodontics, celebrating National Orthodontic Health Month means educating prospective patients about what treatment options are available to them, in addition to keeping current patients informed about orthodontic maintenance and their progress toward achieving a life-changing smile.

Throughout the month of October and beyond, Dr. Brigham is reminding those considering orthodontics that it is never too late to begin treatment. In fact, there are several new therapeutic options designed to accommodate the fast-paced lives of working adults. For people already in treatment, he recommends scheduling regular appointments and following an orthodontic-friendly diet, free of hard, sticky foods like the ones listed below.

Halloween can be a scary time for teeth. Brigham Orthodontics offer these tips to keep teeth safe from decay, and protect braces, clear aligners and other orthodontic “appliances” during the Halloween season:
Avoid sticky situations with your braces. Stay away from hard, sticky, crunchy or chewy candy and snacks. These include hard or chewy candies, caramel, liquorice, taffy, bubblegum (even the sugar free kind) and jelly beans.

Also steer away from nuts, taco chips and popcorn (especially un-popped kernels).

Good alternatives include soft chocolates, peanut butter cups or other melt-in-your-mouth varieties. If you consume sweets, do so in moderation. Avoid the temptation to grab another handful from the bowl filled with treats. Parents may want to limit the time during which children can eat from the Halloween candy bowl, whether they are in orthodontic treatment or not. Brushing and flossing are more important than ever during the Halloween season, when teeth may receive more exposure to sweets that can cause cavities. Orthodontic patients should be especially conscientious about brushing and flossing after consuming sugary or starchy foods.
