Top 10 Health Benefits of Straight Teeth.

Everyone knows the cosmetic benefits of beautiful straight teeth, but more important are the health benefits. This guide is excellent for any patient considering traditional or Invisalign orthodontic treatment.

At Brigham Orthodontics, we want to help you make a lasting first impression with a new smile and great feeling.

Here are several health benefits of having straight teeth.

1. Straight teeth help an individual to effectively bite, chew and speak.

2. Straight teeth contribute to healthy teeth and gums.

3. Properly aligned teeth and jaws may alleviate or prevent physical health problems.

4. Straight teeth are less prone to decay and injury. Decay results when the bacteria in plaque (a colorless, sticky film composed of bacteria, food and saliva) feed on carbohydrates (sugar and starch) we eat or drink to produce acids that can cause cavities. Plaque can also increase the risk for periodontal (gum) disease.

5. Straightening your teeth can make a significant difference to having a healthy heart and lower risk of diabetes. According to the Journal of Dental Research, harmful bacteria below the gum surface of crowded teeth invade the gingival tissue, harm connective tissue and cause inflammation.

6. As for injuries to teeth, protruding upper teeth are more likely to be broken in an accident.

7. Untreated orthodontic problems may become worse. This can lead to tooth decay, gum disease, destruction of the bone that holds teeth in place, and chewing and digestive difficulties.

8. Orthodontic problems can cause abnormal wear of tooth surfaces, inefficient chewing function, excessive stress on gum tissue and the bone that supports the teeth, or misalignment of the jaw joints, sometimes leading to chronic headaches or pain in the face or neck.

9. Treatment by an orthodontist to correct a problem early may be less costly than restorative dental care.

10. Teeth that work better also tend to look better. An attractive smile is a pleasant “side effect” of orthodontic treatment.

11. An attractive smile is a wonderful asset. It contributes to self-esteem, self-confidence and self-image – important qualities at every age.

12. According to an article published by Zachrisson and Zachrisson in 1972, they reported that properly aligned teeth can help the gingiva adapt more tightly around the teeth, which lead to better periodontal health and healthier gums.

Do you know how to maintain your new whitened smile. A 2-minute tip. Featured by Brigham Orthodontics in Scottsdale and Cave Creek, AZ. Call 480-767-8810.

How do I maintain my newly whitened smile?

Portions of this article previously posted at Colgate.com

If you’ve recently gotten your teeth whitened at Brigham Orthodontics or at another provider, what do you do to maintain that great new white smile? Here are some great ideas for home.

Over time, exposure to foods, drinks (especially coffee, tea, colas and red wine) and tobacco will gradually darken your newly whitened teeth. But there are steps you can take to maintain your pearly white smile. Compared to the time and/or money required to whiten teeth, it takes only a small effort to keep them looking their brightest.

Here are some tips for maintaining your newly whitened teeth:

  • Use a whitening toothpaste to remove surface stains and prevent yellowing
  • Brush or rinse immediately after consuming stain-causing beverages or foods
  • Use a straw to drink beverages that stain, such as coffee, tea, colas and red wine
  • Wear a bright shade of lipstick-blue or pink based. It will make your teeth appear whiter. Avoid orange or brown shades
  • Check whether you need a touch up. Depending upon the whitening method you used, you may need a touch up in six months or after a year or two. If you smoke or drink a lot of coffee, you may need a touch up more often

Ongoing regular maintenance for white teeth.

In addition to any teeth whitening process strategy, it is imperative that one brush their teeth twice daily. While teeth whitening strategies are excellent, they do nothing for you if you are not also brushing your teeth regularly. This is first and foremost the most important step to effective teeth maintenance.

To get your teeth whiter at home, you can use an orange peel. The ingredients that make up an orange are good for removing discoloration from the enamel. To use this method, simply peel the orange and rub the peel on your teeth for at least 3 minutes. You can then spit it out. Make regular appointments to have your teeth cleaned by a dentist. You need to schedule these appointments at least once a year. The discoloration on your teeth may not be caused by actual staining but simply by plaque build-up, which is difficult to remove without the professional tools your dentist has. You should not begin a teeth whitening regiment until you are around the age of 16 to 18. Until this time a child’s gums are incredibly sensitive. Therefore, the caustic and abrasive products that are used to clean teeth can cause a child’s mouth to enter a world of pain.

Apple cider vinegar has been known to have many beneficial uses, one of them being teeth whitening. If you brush your teeth every night with this vinegar you will notice within a week how white and bright your teeth start to look. This is a very harmless ingredient and works very effectively. Some people have stated that the vinegar is too irritating to their gums and causes bleeding. If you notice this happening, please discontinue use of it. Every ingredient is going to work differently for different people. Use baking soda to whiten your smile. You can either purchase toothpaste that has baking soda included, or you can create your own whitener. To do this, combine baking soda with salt and brush your teeth with the mixture. Try to do this at least once per day to get the maximum benefit from your home remedy technique.

What’s the deal with braces and romance? Featured by Brigham Orthodontics in Scottsdale and Cave Creek, AZ. Call 480-767-8810.

What’s the deal with braces and romance?

The question comes up time and again: will the gals (or guys) find my braces to be a turn-off? Will I be destined to spend the next few years in a dateless wasteland?

If you’re single and getting braces, this is a serious question. Whether you are 18 or 48, you don’t want to be alone just because you have some brackets on your teeth for a few years.

Before you head to the nearest rooftop and scream, “So I have braces, what’s the big deal?” read on…

We’ve seen this question asked a lot, and the answer is always the same: the men worry that they look like geeks, and the woman re-assure them that if they are nice guys and are attractive in other ways, it does NOT affect the way others see them. Generally, men seem to have a harder time with braces than women. Perhaps this is because women have other factors at work.

In reality, how the object of your affection reacts to you has little to do with what’s in your mouth, and a lot to do with other things. Like your image, your self-confidence, and your willingness to work just a little harder to win over the person you want. We’ve never known anyone to say, “Ewww, he/she has braces, I’d never consider dating him/her.” And if anyone DOES say or think that, you wouldn’t want to date them anyway!

Sure, braces are a stereotype. The little girl in Finding Nemo is the perfect example — slightly ugly, nerdy and mean. On the other side of the spectrum, in real life, there is Tom Cruise. Would any woman not date him because of his ceramic brackets?

For that matter, would any man have not dated Gwen Stefani or Nikki Taylor for their metal mouths? OK, you get the message.

Also keep in mind the some people think braces are sexy. So if someone who didn’t pay attention to you previously suddenly gets very interested after you get braces that may be the reason.

Here’s the main idea: if you look better, you’ll feel better; if you feel better, you’ll be more confident. And if you look good and are confident, you are sexy and attractive to other people.

Ideas for Women

This is a great time to spend a few extra bucks and have a professional make-over. Take a good look at yourself. What could be changed? Your makeup? Your hair? Your wardrobe?

Many day spas and salons offer hair and make-up consultations for reasonable prices. Get yourself out of any rut you may be in and splurge on a new or updated look. If your make-up looks better, they’ll be looking at your beautiful eyes and that great hair, and won’t notice your teeth.

Color consultants were big in the 1980s, and they’re still around today. A color or image consultant can help you update your wardrobe and dress you in colors compatible with your complexion. If you want to do it without professional help, take a trusted fashion-savvy girlfriend or relative (NOT your mother) on a trip to the mall. Take a good look at what’s out there and buy yourself a few great new outfits that accentuate your coloring and your figure.

Are you in shape or near your ideal weight? If not, start an exercise and sensible eating plan and try to stick to it. I know, easier said than done, but it’s worth it.

View article on Teeth Whitening “10 Tips for White Teeth”, click here >> http://goo.gl/lK8KD .

Ideas for Men

The pages of GQ or Details are a good place to start, but if that’s too daunting, go to a high-quality (and/or trendy) men’s store in your area and ask a salesperson for ideas. I know it sounds perilous, but you don’t have to actually buy anything, just see what somebody else thinks would look good on you, and think about it. If you are friends with a fashion-savvy guy, or a trusted woman with hip good taste (sister, aunt, cousin — NOT your mother) see if they’ll come along to help you. Go out on a limb and buy an outfit or two that looks great on you. Women appreciate a well-dressed guy.

Next, don’t be shy about heading over to a day spa for a skin consultation. You’d be surprised how many men get skin treatments these days. Have you ever had a facial? If not, you’re missing something really nice! The idea here is: improve your skin, if necessary.

Then, there’s the haircut. Have you had the exact same haircut for more than 5 years? If so, maybe it’s time for something a bit updated. You don’t need to look like you just stepped out of a weird hairstyle catalogue — you just need a style that looks good on you and is appropriate for your age and in step with today’s styles.

Finally, consider getting to your ideal weight and improving your physical appearance and strength overall. If a good-looking, in-shape man in nice clothes approached me for a date, I wouldn’t give a hoot about a little bit of metal in his mouth — I’d be looking at the rest of him, and listening to what words were coming out of his mouth!

Ideas for Anyone

Aside from this, you might want to take a few hours — or even days — to assess your life as a whole. Are you happy? What do you want to change?  What type of partner would fit into your ideal life? Put it down on paper or type it into your word processor! Don’t be restrained by reality — dream a little bit.

Sometimes finding the right person means knowing who you are and what you want. I’ve heard it said before, and I’ve seen it work: “Know and love yourself, and others will find you.”

What is the impact of first impressions? Featured by Brigham Orthodontics in Cave Creek and Scottsdale, AZ. Call 480-767-8810.

What is the impact of first impressions?

Previously posted on PRnewswire.

New study shows whiter teeth can lead to greater success in work and love. Individuals seen as more attractive, confident, trustworthy and financially secure.

Recently results of a study conducted by an independent research firm provide new evidence that a beautiful white smile has a direct Survey-biz2effect on successful interpersonal interactions, both socially and professionally. “The Impact of Whiter Teeth on Key First Impressions” study, commissioned by Crest Whitestrips, shows that a whiter smile substantially affects how others think of you when you first meet. According to the three-part study, which included simulated job interviews, simulated first dates and a quantitative online survey; more than half of the study participants were more likely to be hired (58%) and received larger salary offers (53%) after their teeth had been whitened. The study also found that evaluators expressed a greater interest in continuing their interaction or “date” with more than half of the study participants (54%) after their teeth had been whitened. “This study provides some of the first findings that speak to the powerful benefits of having a whiter smile,” says Dr. Dacher Keltner, smile psychologist and Professor of Psychology at University of California at Berkeley.

“Visible from 200 feet, it is the intense focus of what other people look at, and a sign of our warmth, confidence, and health.” During the simulated job interviews, it was also found that a majority of the study participants were viewed to be more professional (65%) and more confident (61%) after their teeth had been whitened. And, on their simulated first dates, more than half of study participants were viewed to be more outgoing (59%) after their teeth had been whitened.

The third part of the study, a quantitative online survey of 1,006 people, was consistent with the first two studies conducted, finding Survey-couplethat individuals with whiter teeth have more positive attributes than individuals with stained teeth across the following variables: financial success, trustworthiness and professional success. Regardless of gender, age, income, education, employment or marital status, participants came to the same conclusion. Additionally, participants were asked about the importance of personal appearance. Across the board, the majority agrees a person’s appearance is an indication of their: — Professional success (68%) — Financial success (64%) — Trustworthiness (52%) “White teeth clearly extend far beyond just our smiles,” says Sunny Jain, Brand Manager for Crest Whitestrips. “We’ve provided whiter smiles to more than 30 million people and are thrilled the results of this study affirm their positive affect on social and professional situations.”

Methodology Studies One and Two: Romance/Employment Study One and Study Two were conducted by Kelton Research in two Survey-coupledatingstages on January 11th and January 18th at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, California in which different independent evaluators assessed research subjects before and after use of an at-home whitener. Guidelines were set to ensure a representative sample based on gender, age, and income. Eighty randomly selected participants took part in this study. Each was screened to ensure that they did not have any dental work resistant to teeth whitening agents. Neither participants nor evaluators were informed about the intent of the study. Evaluators in the employment study were required to be accredited or working human resource professionals.

Study Three: Quantitative Validation In Study Three, data were collected by Kelton Research among 1,006 nationally representative respondents between January 1st and January 15th, 2007 using an email invitation and an online survey. Quotas were set to ensure reliable and accurate representation of the total U.S. population. In this particular study, the chances are 95 in 100 that a survey result does not vary, plus or minus, by more than 3.1 percentage points from the result that would be obtained if interviews had been conducted with all persons in the universe represented by the sample

Shaping up your smile with straight teeth. Featured by Brigham Orthodontics in Scottsdale and Cave Creek, Arizona. Call 480-767-8810.

Bene26-2W

Can you really shape up your smile – YES!

Luckily, modern dentistry has come a long way in recent years – and it’s never been easier to shape up your smile. In fact, today dentists have a slew of alternatives to traditional braces when it comes to helping patients straighten their teeth.

Clear aligners: Invisalign

One of the most attractive options for many teens and adults are clear aligners like Invisalign, which are Shape1Wnearly undetectable. They look almost exactly like whitening trays and are custom-fitted to be worn all day except during meals and snacks.

Clear aligners are one of the best options for teen and adult patients who want straighter teeth. With aligners, you can achieve a dramatic transformation, and it’s almost impossible to tell that you’re wearing them.

Clear aligners also provide easy access to brushing and flossing, as they’re easily removable. And they’re a great choice for those who want to shape up their smile on the sly – and avoid the look of traditional braces.

Brigham Orthodontics is one of the top providers of Invisalign, in fact Dr Brigham is ranked in the top 1% internationally!

Take the FREE Invisalign Smile Assessment, click here >> http://goo.gl/oRXo8 .

Other options for straight teethShapeDamonW

Other alternative systems can hide brackets and wires by placing them behind the teeth instead of on the outside surfaces. This alternative, known as lingual braces, may not always be appropriate, but other options like clear wires and brackets can also help braces blend in – rather than stand out.

Can you afford straight teeth?

At the end of the day, the idea of a straighter smile might sound great, but the bottom line is affordability. ShapeFinancingWBrigham Orthodontics offer several third-party financing programs to make your selection easy and affordable These programs allows patients to make monthly payments as treatment progresses. Bank financing for orthodontics can be another increasingly popular option.

Don’t wait to get your teeth straight!

Take the FREE Invisalign Smile Assessment, click here >> http://goo.gl/oRXo8 .

Are you a good candidate for teeth whitening? Featured by Brigham Orthodontics in Scottsdale and Cave Creek, AZ. Call 480-767-8810.

Who are and are not good candidates for teeth whitening procedures?

Tooth whitening is a procedure to lighten teeth and remove stains and discolorations. Teeth whitening is the new ‘hot thing’, unfortunately not every provider is a professional, you need to check them out. Brigham Orthodontics provides professional teeth whitening that really is successful in creating your best healthy smile.

Below is a simple guide for you to determine if you are a good candidate for teeth whitening.

How do teeth become stained?

There are many reasons why teeth become discolored. Among the reasons are the consumption of stain-causing beverages (colas, teas, coffees, red wines), consumption of dark-colored berries, tobacco use, excessive fluoride use, use of certain medications (for example, tetracycline), trauma to the teeth (such as when bumped in an accident), and simply the aging process itself (the enamel on your teeth becomes thin with age).

Who are the best candidates for teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is ideal for patients who have healthy, unrestored teeth (no fillings) and healthy gums who would like a brighter smile. Patients with yellow tones to their teeth respond best.

Who are not good candidates for teeth whitening?

Circumstances under which teeth whitening may not be recommended or will be less successful include:

(Be sure to check with your dental provider in order to make a good final decision)

Age and pregnancy issues.

Bleaching is not recommended in children under the age of 16. This is because the pulp chamber, or nerve of the tooth, is enlarged until this age. Teeth whitening under this condition could irritate the pulp or cause it to become sensitive. Teeth whitening is also not recommended in pregnant or lactating women.

Sensitive teeth and allergies to products.

Individuals with sensitive teeth and gums, receding gums and/or defective restorations should consult with their dentist prior to using a tooth whitening system. Anyone allergic to peroxide (the whitening agent) should not use a bleaching product.

Gum disease, worn enamel, cavities, and exposed roots.

Individuals with gum disease or teeth with worn enamel are generally discouraged from undergoing a tooth whitening procedure. Cavities need to be treated before undergoing any whitening procedure. This is because the whitening solutions penetrate into any existing decay and the inner areas of the tooth, which can cause sensitivity. Also, whitening procedures will not work on exposed tooth roots because roots do not have an enamel layer.

Fillings, crowns and other restorations.

Tooth-colored fillings and resin composite materials used in dental restorations (crowns, veneers, bonding, bridges) do not whiten. Therefore, using a whitening agent on teeth that do and do not contain restorations will results in uneven whitening–in this case, making the teeth without restorations appear lighter than those with restorations. Any whitening procedure should be done prior to the placement of composite fillings, bonding, veneers, crowns, dentures, or porcelain restorations in order to best match the degree of whitening to your new tooth color. A minimum of 2 weeks following a whitening procedure should be allowed before crowns, bondings, or veneers are completed. This will allow enough time for the enamel to remineralize and optimize the bonding strength. Tooth-colored fillings will need to be replaced after the bleaching process is complete. Individuals with numerous restorations that would result in uneven whitening may be better off considering bonding, veneers or crowns rather than a tooth whitening system. Ask your dentist what strategy may be best for you.

Unrealistic expectations.

Individuals who expect their teeth to be a new “blinding white” may be disappointed with their results. Smokers need to be aware that their results will be limited unless they refrain from continued smoking, particularly during the bleaching process. A healthy guide as to a reasonable degree of whiteness to achieve with a whitening process that would give a natural appearance to a person’s teeth is a slightly whiter color than the whites of your eyes.
